Biography

Mun G, born Mungi Matovu, is a prominent figure in the Ugandan music scene, recognized for his contributions to hip hop and his distinct stage name. Born as the first child to Maria Namirembe Mungi and the late Mungi Matovu, Mun G has two brothers and two sisters. His educational journey took him to Bright Grammar Boarding Primary School and Aga Khan Senior Secondary School in Masaka. Mun G furthered his studies, earning a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Makerere University.

The choice of the stage name "Mun G" stems from a playful modification of his birth name, where he dropped the 'i' in Mungi to add a touch of swagger. Mun G humorously asserts that the 'G' in his name stands for "too much" in the music industry. Professionally entering the music scene in 2009 with his debut song "Ebintu," Mun G initially served as GNL's hype man before establishing his solo career.

Hip hop became Mun G's genre of choice, influenced by the global dominance of artists like Nas and Jay-Z during his formative years. A fellow schoolmate, Hudson Ssentumbwe, played a pivotal role by sharing stories and materials from the US, sparking Mun G's interest in hip hop. Together with friends, they formed the group "Ghetto Hip Hop," miming songs from iconic artists such as Jay-Z, Ja Rule, Eminem, and Nas.

Mun G's music, often characterized by its comical nature, serves as a stress-reliever for his audience, aiming to bring happiness amidst life's challenges.
